Welcome to the Retro Future
If the Jetsons, a vintage airport lounge, and a Palm Springs design studio had a restaurant baby, HERO would be their impossibly stylish offspring. And The AZ Insider is here for every fabulous inch of it.
The restaurant’s midcentury modern aesthetic is a master class in retro cool without veering into kitschy theme-park territory. Pops of blue, tangerine, charcoal, cream, and gray play against glass blocks, textured fabrics, curved booths, and tables that appear to be having an identity crisis of their own — somewhere between boomerang, tulip, and tripod.
Even the plates, dishes, and glassware have personality to spare.
I’m not sure I’ve ever fallen in love with a water glass and appetizer plates before, but apparently, that’s where we are now.
HERO’s designers clearly understood the assignment. Every curve, color, and quirky detail feels intentional, right down to the retro-funky tableware.
Settle into a curved booth, claim one of the lounge-worthy couches, or reserve the semi-private dining room. There’s also room for a fashionable entourage that prefers to dine in style rather than elbow-to-elbow.
A spacious outdoor patio is expected to join the party in early 2027.
Italy and Japan Walk Into a Restaurant…
HERO’s menu is every bit as intriguing as its interiors. Think coastal Mediterranean and Italian cuisine with house-made pasta, exceptional seafood, and seasonal ingredients — then throw in a Japanese culinary twist.
Wait. What?
Executive chef Yuji Iwasa somehow makes this cross-cultural romance feel completely natural, weaving Japanese ingredients and techniques into traditional and modern Italian dishes.
Consider the Chicken Katsu Parmigiana, a glorious collision of crispy, katsu-inspired chicken, ooey-gooey mozzarella, and vodka sauce. It’s as if chicken Parmesan took a fabulous vacation to Tokyo and came home with a whole new attitude.
The tuna crudo is another standout, combining yuzu kosho, Maldon sea salt, extra-virgin olive oil, and crumbled pistachios. Clean, bright, and beautifully balanced.
Then there’s the scallop crudo, an unexpected little showoff featuring tangy blood orange acqua pazza, pickled fennel, and shiso. It’s delicate, lively, and just adventurous enough to make your taste buds sit up and pay attention.

Holy Vongole! The Pasta Steals the Show
During a recent visit, the Black Spaghetti Vongole delivered the evening’s biggest culinary plot twist. House-made squid ink angel hair pasta arrives tucked inside a gorgeous halo of carefully arranged clams, all bathed in a white wine, garlic, and butter sauce.
The presentation is practically architectural. The flavor? Even better. Rather than drowning the dish in an aggressive tidal wave of garlic, white wine and butter, the sauce knows its place. It enhances the delicate clams and pasta without stealing the spotlight.
A little restraint. A lot of flavor. Bravo, HERO. This is the kind of pasta that makes conversation stop mid-sentence.
Other menu standouts include polenta with wild Japanese mushrooms, New York sirloin with salsa verde, and the outrageously good Branzino Piccata.
The branzino arrives with oven-roasted tomatoes still on the vine, a clever visual flourish, alongside capers and lemon.
Piccata can be a dangerous game. Too much lemon and suddenly dinner tastes like a citrus hostage situation.HERO avoids that particular culinary crime, delivering a beautifully proportioned sauce that complements the fish rather than overpowering it.
Someone in this kitchen clearly knows when to put down the lemon.
Dessert Has Dual Citizenship
Just when you think HERO has exhausted its culinary creativity, dessert arrives with another delicious passport stamp.
Iwasa’s adorably named Matcha Tea-Ra-Misu is where Italian tradition and Japanese inspiration collide in the sweetest possible way.
Impossibly light and fluffy, the dessert layers white chocolate and ladyfingers with a bright passion fruit coulis that brings a welcome little zing to the party.
It’s playful, unexpected, and a refreshing departure from the usual tiramisu routine.
The black sesame panna cotta is equally spoon-worthy, pairing the nutty depth of Japanese black sesame with tangy grapefruit segments and a delicate crumble of freeze-dried meringue.
Creamy, crunchy, tart, and just a little mysterious.
Apparently, even dessert at HERO refuses to pick a nationality.
A HERO Worth Rooting For
With its daring culinary mashups, meticulously styled midcentury interiors, curiously strong cocktails, and a menu that refuses to color inside the lines, HERO is a refreshing departure from the predictable Phoenix dining playbook.
The atmosphere is swanky without being stuffy. The food is inventive without trying too hard. And the Italian-Japanese culinary chemistry is far more than a clever gimmick.
HERO is open for dinner Wednesday and Thursday, 4-10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 4-11 p.m.
