Healthcare has a funny way of testing everyone’s patience. Ten minutes with a provider, two weeks waiting for an appointment and a bill that makes you wish you’d stayed home. Not exactly the VIP treatment. But Corner Health is shaking up the usual routine with longer visits, experienced nurse practitioners and primary care that feels personal without the premium price tag.
With more than 100 independently owned, nurse practitioner-led practices across Arizona, the network offers more face time, familiar faces and fewer reasons to dread making an appointment. According to Corner Health, patients can see out-of-pocket costs up to 70% lower than at traditional large health systems.
In a state where nearly one in five adults doesn’t have a personal doctor, according to a 2024 CDC report, that’s a pretty compelling pitch.
The secret? Let nurse practitioners do what they do best: care for patients. Corner Health handles the technology and administrative support, while providers run their own practices and see roughly half as many patients per day as the average provider.
That means appointments averaging 34 minutes, with new-patient visits clocking in at 40 minutes across more than 50,000 visits. Patients can stick with the same nurse practitioner and communicate directly between appointments. No need to start their entire medical life story from scratch every time.
“Patients should not have to choose between high-quality care that feels personal and care they can afford,” says Lava Sunder, Corner Health co-founder and CEO.
The network is selective, accepting only one in five applicants. Its nurse practitioners average more than 14 years of clinical experience. In Goodyear, Carolyn Collier knows what that independence can mean.
After suddenly losing her husband, the single mother of two was determined to make her longtime dream of owning a practice happen. With Corner Health taking on the administrative workload, Collier left travel nursing to run Prism Wellness Center full time.
Today, she cares for patients in English and Spanish, with time to learn more than what’s written on their charts. “I have the time to really understand my patients, their medical histories, their health concerns, and who they are as people,” says Collier. “That allows me to provide more thoughtful, thorough, and personalized care. Some of my patients even hug me on their way out.”
Hugs at a healthcare appointment? That’s not something you hear every day.
The practical perks are worth noting, too. Appointment waits average less than two days, with same-day, next-day, evening and Saturday visits available at many practices.
Services cover everything from annual wellness exams, preventive screenings and chronic-condition management to women’s and reproductive health, mental health, metabolic health, hormone care and family medicine.
And there’s no concierge membership fee. Participating practices accept major insurance plans, including UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Aetna, Cigna, TriWest and Medicare.
The network stretches from Phoenix, Scottsdale and Goodyear to Tucson, Flagstaff and beyond. In Maricopa County, 96% of residents live within 10 miles of a participating practice.
The reviews offer another clue. Corner Health reports a 4.9 average patient rating, with 96% giving five stars. Another 88% describe their experience as better than with previous providers, while 88% report greater trust in their provider’s guidance.
The word that pops up most often in patient reviews? “Listen.”
Turns out, feeling heard might be healthcare’s most underrated luxury.
