A new Flagstaff beer is giving dog lovers a reason to raise a glass, and this one comes with a little extra tail wag. Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit has partnered with Flagstaff-based Historic Brewing Company to release Dog Days Witbier, a 4.6% ABV beer brewed and canned in Flagstaff to benefit Dr. Kelly’s PAL Fund, which helps provide free and subsidized surgical care for pets whose owners need financial assistance.
The beer will make its official debut during Historic Brewing Company’s Hot Dog Days of Summer, a dog-friendly taproom celebration from 2 to 6 p.m. July 18 at Historic’s Eastside Taproom, located at 4366 E. Huntington Drive in Flagstaff. The afternoon will bring together adoptable dogs from High Country Humane, hot dogs from Dober Dogs, dog treats, live music, local animal-loving organizations and the release of the new collaboration beer.
“This partnership is really about meeting a community need in a creative, local way,” says Doug Patriquin, co-founder of Dr. Kelly’s. “There are so many pets and families in Northern Arizona who need help accessing care, and the PAL Fund allows us to step in when cost becomes the barrier. Partnering with Historic Brewing gives people an easy way to support that mission while showing up for a fun community event.”
Historic Brewing Company’s Hot Dog Days of Summer will include:
- Dog Days Witbier Release: Guests can be among the first to try the new witbier brewed and canned by Historic Brewing Company in collaboration with Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit. A portion of proceeds from beer sales will benefit the PAL Fund.
- Dog Adoptions: High Country Humane will be onsite with adoptable dogs, giving attendees the chance to meet pets looking for loving homes.
- Locally Made Hot Dogs and Dog Treats: Dober Dogs will serve hot dogs throughout the event, while Miss Barkley’s Bakery and Boutique and Hoppy Tails Treats will offer treats and goodies for four-legged guests.
- K9 Partners: Coconino County K9 Partners will join the event with demonstrations and community engagement.
- Live Music: Marko: One Man Band will perform from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., bringing live music to the taproom patio.
- Pet-Friendly Fun: Guests are invited to bring their dogs and enjoy an afternoon of beer, food, music, adoptions and local animal-loving organizations.
A Beer With a Bigger Purpose
The PAL Fund helps cover surgical care for pets in need, including services that support local animal shelters, rescue work and families facing financial hardship. For many pet owners, that assistance can mean the difference between waiting and getting a pet the help they need.
Since 2016, Dr. Kelly’s Surgical Unit has provided affordable surgical care to more than 300,000 dogs and cats across Arizona. Through accessible services, community partnerships and financial assistance programs, the organization works to improve the lives of pets and the people who love them.
Historic Brewing Company, known for its Flagstaff roots and community-centered taproom events, was already planning its second annual Hot Dog Days of Summer celebration when Dr. Kelly’s team reached out about a possible partnership. The timing lined up naturally, pairing a summer beer release with a broader effort to raise funds and awareness for animal welfare in Northern Arizona.
“We were approached by Dr. Kelly’s team about collaborating to help raise funds and awareness for the incredible work they do throughout Northern Arizona,” says Zack Stoll, head brewer at Historic Brewing Company. “We jumped at the chance to support their mission and help local animals get the care they need. Dr. Kelly’s does so much more than spay and neuter services. Their team provides essential veterinary care that gives pets a better chance at staying healthy, staying out of shelters and finding loving homes.”
