Insider Info

Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West is a Smithsonian Affiliate with serious range, telling the story of the American West across 19 states plus Canada and Mexico, so yes, it’s giving global museum energy right in Old Town.

Scottsdale just got a little more iconic. On March 24, Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West unveiled its $12 million expansion, introducing the Louis Sands IV Center and stepping confidently into its next era.

The new addition clocks in at 12,000 square feet across two stories, bringing the museum’s total footprint to 55,000 square feet. Bigger, yes. But more importantly, sharper, richer, and way more immersive. This is the kind of upgrade that turns a great museum into a must-visit cultural flex.

The city showed up for it, too. Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowsky officially declared March 24 “Western Spirit Day,” calling the museum “a coveted Scottsdale gem” and a point of pride for the “West’s Most Western” town.

Inside, the Louis Sands IV Center delivers four new exhibitions that hit from every angle. The main gallery level leans into material storytelling in a big way. Visions in Bronze explores how sculpture helped shape the mythology of the American West, with works spanning from Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell to contemporary artists. From Earth to the Stars highlights American Indian jewelry, where silver, turquoise, and stone become deeply personal expressions of identity and heritage. Fire of Ages pulls visitors into more than six centuries of ceramic tradition, spotlighting Hopi and Southwestern pottery through evolving styles and generational craftsmanship.

Upstairs, Working Pardners: Masterworks from the Eddie Basha Collection finally gets its moment. The exhibition offers a rare public look at one of the most significant collections of Western and American Indian art, centered on the relationships between artists, collectors, and the communities that shape the work.

“The grand opening of the Louis Sands IV Center marks a transformative new chapter for Western Spirit Museum and a defining moment for Scottsdale,” says CEO and Executive Director Todd Bankofier. “This must-see destination was designed to inspire pride in our community, spark curiosity, and deliver a powerful, immersive cultural experience that really connects with our guests.”

And right now, the museum isn’t just open. It’s on a full-on cultural victory lap. The “Unmistakably West” celebration runs through March 29, turning the entire week into an experience. Think live Western music, artist demos, pop-up talks every 15 minutes, and even stagecoach photo ops for that Old West moment.

Saturday, March 28 is the main event, with free admission all day and a packed lineup of programming inside and out. Sunday keeps the doors open for free again, giving everyone a chance to explore the new space and exhibitions without hesitation.

“The Louis Sands IV Center allows us to tell the story of the West in a new, more expansive way,” says Chief Curator Andrew Patrick Nelson.

Translation: Scottsdale’s favorite museum just became its coolest.
