AZ travelers, your next Western escape does not have to involve a pool chair, a prickly pear margarita and three consecutive hours of doing absolutely nothing. It can, apparently, involve boots. And cattle work. And learning how to sit a little taller in the saddle.
True Ranch Collection is leaning into the “skillcation” moment with dude ranch getaways that give travelers something to bring home besides a sunburn and a camera roll full of sunsets. Across its historic ranches in Arizona, Wyoming and Montana, guests can learn horseback riding, cattle work, shooting, archery, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, guided hiking, line dancing and other ranch-life essentials.
The big pull for locals looking beyond the state line is the chance to experience the West in a totally different setting.
At Blackwater Creek Lodge & Guest Ranch in Wyoming, the experience leans rugged and mountain-minded. Guests can explore the Yellowstone region on guided hikes or trade dry land for whitewater rafting, with scenery, wildlife and outdoor adventure doing the heavy lifting.
In Montana, Circle Bar Ranch brings the classic dude ranch energy with a family-friendly spin. Guests can take part in The Cowboy Way, a hands-on program covering horsemanship skills like catching, grooming and saddling horses, riding instruction, trailering and hauling demonstrations, cattle work and even a group rodeo.
The littlest ranch recruits get their own lane, too. Circle Bar Ranch’s Buckaroo Kids’ Program introduces children to feeding, grooming and saddling horses, along with arena skills like barrel racing and pole bending.
After sunset, the Western mood keeps going with square dancing and line dancing, because apparently vacation legs can be used for more than walking to brunch.
“Dude ranch vacations are about more than checking activities off a list. They’re about connecting with the traditions of the West, both old and new,” says Russell True, managing partner of True Ranch Collection. “Whether trying their hand at the basics of horsemanship or working a cattle roundup, or learning a new hobby like rock climbing or whitewater rafting, the goal is for guests to head back home relaxed and with a deeper appreciation for life on a ranch.”
Horseback riding remains the heart of the True Ranch Collection experience. Slow rides are open to guests ages 5 and up, while fast rides are available for ages 8 and older. Wranglers help match riders with horses, teach safety precautions and guide guests along trails that may wind through canyons, across rivers, through open country, to historic sites, up mountains to scenic viewpoints or toward breakfast cookouts and afternoon snacks.
Some ranches add a little aim to the itinerary with shooting and archery programs. Depending on the property, guests may try target shooting with .22 rifles, clay pigeon shooting, black powder rifles, BB guns for children or 3D archery courses.
Arizona travelers who want the ranch experience closer to home have options, too.
Near Tombstone, Tombstone Monument Ranch & Cattle Co. offers spring and fall roundups where guests can spend a week helping with cattle drives, branding, ear tagging and banding calves. In Wickenburg, Kay El Bar Guest Ranch also offers The Cowboy Way program. Outside Tucson, White Stallion Ranch adds a different kind of vertical adventure with beginner, intermediate and advanced rock-climbing routes led by an instructor, plus nighttime stargazing through telescopes.
Whether the trip points toward the Arizona desert, Wyoming’s mountain country or Montana ranchland, True Ranch Collection is giving travelers a hands-on way to experience the West.
Guests may show up looking for a vacation. They can leave with a steadier seat, sharper aim, a few dance steps and a much better answer to “So, what did you do on your trip?”
