Smiling Moose Sandwich Grill is bringing a little Rocky Mountain energy to Scottsdale.
The Colorado-born fast-casual concept opens Aug. 17 at 2765 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 103, with a local ownership group that includes James Harden, Troy Payne, Nico Fricchione, Patrick Fricchione, Brian Padilla, Carlos Munoz and George Gundrey.
On the food front, expect made-to-order sandwiches, wraps, soups, salads, burgers and freshly baked cookies. The longtime signature is the Original Mo, a hot sandwich stacked with grilled meat, melted cheese, crisp veggies and tangy vinaigrette on a fresh-baked baguette.
Scottsdale is getting a few extras, too.
The location plans quarterly collaborations with guest chefs, giving outside culinary talent a chance to work with the Smiling Moose team on special offerings. Separately, the restaurant will also have a secret menu, adding another layer for diners who like knowing there might be more happening than what is printed in front of them.
The space is designed for both sit-down meals and quick stops, with indoor seating, online ordering for pickup and delivery, and catering services.
“We’re thrilled to bring Smiling Moose to the Valley,” Brian Padilla says. “Our goal is to provide delicious, high-quality food in a welcoming environment where families, friends and coworkers can gather and enjoy a great meal.”
Harden is one member of the seven-person local ownership group behind the Scottsdale restaurant. The former Arizona State standout says opening the concept in the community carries some personal meaning.
“Today marks not just a new chapter for this community, but a new chapter for my life,” Harden says. “I am excited to be a part of the team bringing Smiling Moose to Scottsdale. This has been my home for many years, and it makes sense to have roots in the place that gave me my start. We’re committed to providing quality ingredients, quick service and a welcoming space for everyone.”
Founded in Colorado in 2003, Smiling Moose has grown around fresh ingredients, generous portions and an outdoors-inspired approach to hospitality. The brand also emphasizes community involvement and supporting organizations in the neighborhoods it serves.
Smiling Moose has been recognized by FastCasual.com as a Top 100 Mover & Shaker, but Scottsdale’s debut is less about simply planting another flag and more about giving the Valley its own take on the concept.
Opening day runs from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 17, with a ribbon cutting and promotions throughout the day. The first 100 guests will receive a free six-inch Mo signature sandwich and a $50 Adidas gift card courtesy of Harden.
One thing’s clear: this Moose didn’t wander into Scottsdale quietly.
