Bring the documents. Clear the trunk. Help make home projects safer for the smallest, furriest, and most curious members of the household.

Tax season had its moment. Now Oakley’s Oath is giving Scottsdale a very satisfying reason to clear the clutter.

The Scottsdale-based nonprofit is hosting a free community paper-shredding event from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 16, in the Roaring Fork parking lot at 4800 N. Scottsdale Road. Sponsored by Insperity, the morning event will include light bites, because responsible document destruction should absolutely come with a snack.

Donations will be accepted, with proceeds supporting Oakley’s Oath and its mission to protect children and pets during in-home projects.

Founded by Julie and Maury Kessler after the loss of their beloved dog Oakley, the nonprofit was born from a devastating accident during work at the family’s home. According to Oakley’s Oath, the Kessler family was having roof work done when a contractor placed a lightweight, clear plastic tarp over the pool. Oakley went into the backyard, fell through the tarp, and drowned.

Julie Kessler turned that heartbreak into action. Oakley’s Oath now works to improve communication between homeowners and service providers, helping families spot preventable risks before they become tragedies.

“We are aiming to educate residents and any service provider that come into your home about keeping children and pets safe when work is being done in and around the home,” Julie says.

The organization focuses on practical, common-sense guidance for real life: the backyard remodel, the service visit, the open gate, the power tools, the pool tarp that looks solid but is not. Oakley’s Oath encourages homeowners to ask more than what a project costs or when it will be finished. The bigger question is how the work may affect the children and pets moving through that space every day.

Funds raised through the shredding event will support the Oakley’s Oath Certification Program, an initiative designed to recognize contractors who commit to safe, family-focused job site practices. The goal is to create a stronger standard in the home-improvement world, giving homeowners more confidence that the people working in and around their homes are thinking about safety along with craftsmanship.

For Oakley’s Oath, the event is more than a paper purge. It is a community moment, a way to turn old files into support for a cause rooted in compassion, awareness, and prevention.
