In Arizona, generosity is more than a value; it is a way of life. From boardrooms to classrooms, ballfields to board service, countless individuals quietly give their time, talent, and resources to strengthen the communities they call home. This #MissionMonday column shines a light on those difference-makers. Each week, we spotlight a philanthropic leader or volunteer whose passion for service is creating real, lasting impact across the state. Through their stories, we explore the “why” behind their giving, the mission that fuels their commitment, and the nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to serve Arizona’s most pressing needs.
Today, we welcome Nick Smith, Executive Vice President of National PEO, who serves as the board chair of the Fiesta Sports Foundation.
What inspired you to get involved with this organization, and why has its mission remained important to you?
As a former four-year linebacker at Notre Dame, football helped shape who I am and sparked my passion for community impact. When those two passions came together and I was introduced to the Fiesta Sports Foundation in 2012, it felt like a natural fit. It gave me the opportunity to use my love of the game and the power of sports as a force for meaningful change, helping uplift the next generation of leaders across Arizona.
After seeing the Foundation’s impact up close, I knew I wanted to be involved long term. It has pushed me to grow both personally and as a leader. As our communities and state continue to evolve, so does the need to invest in the people and efforts that keep them strong. Fiesta Sports Foundation meets those needs and shows up for Arizonans in meaningful ways. That is what makes this mission so personal to me. Our commitment to giving, and our ability to continually evolve how we give, is what sets the Foundation apart.
For those unfamiliar, can you share the core mission of the nonprofit and the community it serves here in Arizona?
The Fiesta Sports Foundation’s mission is to deliver positive economic impact and charitable resources that benefit communities across Arizona. We do that through premier events that showcase the state on a national stage, including the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl and the Rate Bowl, along with a year-round calendar of sports and entertainment events that fuel our giving.
“Our season never ends” is our motto. We operate year-round, serving all 15 counties and 22 Tribal communities across the state, and support initiatives aligned with our core pillars of youth, sports, and education.
That impact is made possible by more than 3,000 annual volunteers, a dedicated Board of Directors, and our Yellow Jacket Committee, a group of 130 leaders who work year-round to identify needs and make a difference statewide. I am honored to lead them as board chair this year.
What is one program, initiative, or moment that truly captures the impact this nonprofit organization is making right now?
There is nothing quite like the Foundation’s signature Wishes for Teachers program. This past year alone, we surprised 540 teachers across Arizona, granting each a $2,500 classroom wish for a total of $1.5 million in direct support. As the largest direct teacher support program in the state, Wishes for Teachers has delivered nearly $10 million to Arizona classrooms over the past decade, and it has been incredibly rewarding to be part of.
Each grant reflects a teacher’s vision, whether creating a new learning space, purchasing uniforms, or introducing innovative tools. The program was designed to address the resource gaps teachers face so they do not have to pay out of pocket to enrich their students’ experiences.
Applications open each September, with the program culminating in our Palo Verde Wishes for Teachers Draft Day presented by SRP in November. Calling a teacher to share the news is always a highlight. It remains a direct and meaningful way to support educators and students, and the community can take part through year-round giving.
Are there any upcoming nonprofit events, campaigns, or initiatives you are especially excited about in the coming months?
Our annual Fiesta Sports Foundation Football Kickoff each August is one of my favorite events. It marks the start of college football season and brings together everything we love about the game and our community.
We celebrate standout boys and girls high school football and flag football athletes, giving them a well-deserved moment in the spotlight, while also hearing from legends of the game.
What makes it even more meaningful is the impact behind it. Through our live fundraising appeal, we support Wishes for Teachers and fund programs that go directly back into classrooms across the state. It is tradition, community, and giving brought to life in the way the Fiesta Sports Foundation does best. It is a lot of fun, too.
How do you balance your professional life with your commitment to giving back, and what advice would you offer to others who want to do the same?
Both as a player and a coach, football taught me a lot about balance. You do not always get to choose when you show up, you just have to be ready. It comes down to discipline. There will always be demands on your time, so be intentional about what you prioritize.
Also, recognize that your choices can make a real difference in people’s lives. Over time, those choices define your impact and reflect your commitment to something bigger than yourself. Take pride in that.
If your philanthropic work had a theme song, what would it be and why?
“I’m Coming Out” by Diana Ross. I want people to feel invited in and experience the joy of giving.
Outside of your work with the organization, what are three local spots you especially love?
I love Old Town Scottsdale, especially Bottled Blonde on game days. Isabella’s Kitchen and Vicinos are also at the top of my list for a great meal.
