Insider Info

Denise Voss brings real heart to the 2026 Phoenix Heart Ball. Since joining the committee in 2017, she has helped champion the American Heart Association’s mission through education, prevention, research, healthier lifestyles, and CPR training. She and her husband have even helped fund CPR kits in local schools, proving her philanthropy comes with a pulse.

In Arizona, generosity is more than a value; it is a way of life. From boardrooms to classrooms, ballfields to board service, countless individuals quietly give their time, talent, and resources to strengthen the communities they call home. This weekly Mission Monday column shines a light on those difference-makers. Each week, we spotlight a philanthropic leader or volunteer whose passion for service is creating real, lasting impact across the state. Through their stories, we explore the “why” behind their giving, the mission that fuels their commitment, and the nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to serve Arizona’s most pressing needs.

Today, we welcome Denise Voss, the 2026 Chairman of the Phoenix Heart Ball, which supports the American Heart Association.

What inspired you to get involved with this organization, and why has its mission remained important to you?

I became involved with the American Heart Association ten years ago through the Phoenix Heart Ball, and what immediately struck me was how personal heart disease and stroke are to so many families. Almost everyone has a story — a parent, spouse, friend, or colleague whose life has been impacted. Over the years, I have seen firsthand how education, research, advocacy, and community support truly save lives. That mission has stayed deeply important to me because the work is not just about funding science; it is about giving people more time with the ones they love and creating healthier futures for our communities.

For those unfamiliar, can you share the core mission of the organization and the community it serves here in Arizona?

The mission of the American Heart Association is to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives. Here in Arizona, that mission comes to life through investments in groundbreaking cardiovascular research, community education, prevention programs, CPR training, advocacy efforts, and improved access to quality healthcare and nutrition resources. The organization serves communities across the state, with a strong focus on reducing health disparities and empowering individuals with the tools and knowledge to take control of their health.

What is a program, initiative, or moment that truly captures the impact this organization is making right now?

One initiative that deeply resonates with me is the American Heart Association’s work surrounding CPR and AED education through Cardiac Emergency Response Plans. Whether in schools, businesses, sports organizations, or community groups, these plans help prepare people to respond during a cardiac emergency and ultimately save lives. Arizona now has a mandate requiring AEDs in schools with athletic programs, but unfortunately, there is not enough funding attached to support many schools in implementing these lifesaving programs. Through increased awareness, CPR training, and greater access to AEDs, we have the opportunity to empower communities with the knowledge and tools needed to take immediate action when every second matters.

Are there any upcoming nonprofit events, campaigns, or initiatives you are especially excited about in the coming months?

As Chairman of the 2026 Phoenix Heart Ball, I am incredibly excited about this year’s theme, Transformative Hearts: Innovate. Educate. Empower. The campaign reflects our focus on advancing research and innovation, expanding education and awareness, and empowering communities to take action. We have several exciting events and partnerships leading up to the Ball, including community giveback campaigns, educational programming, and fundraising efforts that bring people together in meaningful and inspiring ways. Most of all, I am excited for the Phoenix Heart Ball on November 21st — the culmination of a year-long effort to raise critical funds, celebrate our community’s generosity, and further the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association.

How do you balance your professional life with your commitment to giving back, and what advice would you offer to others who want to do the same?

For me, giving back is not something separate from life — it is part of how I want to live my life. Balance comes from being intentional with time and surrounding yourself with people who share your values and support your commitment. My advice to others is to start with something you genuinely care about. You do not have to do everything at once. Whether it is volunteering, attending an event, mentoring, or making introductions, every contribution matters. Philanthropy is not about perfection; it is about showing up consistently and using your talents, network, and energy to help others.

If your philanthropic work had a theme song, what would it be and why?

“Rise Up” by Andra Day. The song is powerful, hopeful, and resilient — all qualities that reflect the mission work we do. It reminds me that even in difficult moments, people and communities can come together, lift one another up, and create meaningful change.

Outside of your work with the organization, what are three local spots that you especially love?

A few of my favorite local spots are Dominick’s Steakhouse for celebrations and gatherings, Camelback Mountain for the beauty and energy of Arizona outdoors, and Neiman Marcus Scottsdale, which has been such a wonderful community partner and gathering place for so many philanthropic and fashion events over the years.
