Each week, we spotlight a philanthropic leader or volunteer whose passion for service is creating real, lasting impact across the state. Through their stories, we explore the “why” behind their giving, the mission that fuels their commitment, and the nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to serve Arizona’s most pressing needs.
Today, we welcome Mark Judy, Pima Medical Institute’s Mesa Campus Director, who works with Pima Medical Institute and Banner Health Foundation.
What inspired you to get involved with this organization, and why has its mission remained important to you?
My connection to Banner Children’s Hospital and the Banner Health Foundation is personal. Over the years, I have had close friends whose children received care there while battling serious medical conditions. My own family also experienced the incredible care provided by Banner Children’s Hospital when my daughter required surgery after suffering a severe arm fracture. Supporting Banner is my way of giving back to an organization that has made a meaningful difference for people I care about and its mission remains important because every family deserves hope, comfort and exceptional care when facing a medical crisis.
For those unfamiliar, can you share the core mission of the organization and the community it serves here in Arizona?
Banner Children’s Hospital serves children and families across Arizona by providing specialized pediatric healthcare and support services. The Banner Health Foundation is the nonprofit wing of the hospital that helps with donations, funding, family programs and drives to help those at the hospital.
While the medical care is exceptional, what stands out to me is the organization’s commitment to caring for the whole child and supporting families throughout their journey. Whether a child is undergoing treatment, recovering from surgery or facing a long hospital stay, Banner works to provide comfort, encouragement and resources that help families navigate challenging circumstances.
What is a program, initiative, or moment that truly captures the impact this organization is making right now?
Pima Medical Institute’s “Christmas in July” toy drive is a wonderful example of how we can partner with Banner to have a meaningful impact on the lives of patients and families. While a toy may seem like a small thing, it can provide comfort and a sense of normalcy for a child who is facing treatment, surgery or an extended hospital stay. It also gives the broader community an opportunity to participate in supporting local families in a tangible way. Seeing students, employees, friends and community members come together to bring a little joy to children reminds me that even simple acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.
Are there any upcoming nonprofit events, campaigns, or initiatives you are especially excited about in the coming months?
I am especially excited about this year’s “Christmas in July” toy drive which is an annual initiative between the students and staff at Pima Medical Institute and the Banner Health Foundation.
Each year, the generosity of individuals, businesses and organizations helps brighten the lives of children receiving care at Banner Children’s Hospital. I’m looking forward to seeing our students, faculty, staff and community partners rally around this effort and demonstrate the power of collective generosity. It’s encouraging to see so many people willing to come together for a cause that directly benefits children and families in our community.
How do you balance your professional life with your commitment to giving back, and what advice would you offer to others who want to do the same?
I have found that giving back to your community doesn’t have to be separate from your professional life. At Pima Medical Institute, we have an opportunity to create a culture of service and community involvement that extends beyond the classrooms. By supporting initiatives like the “Christmas in July” toy drive, we can engage students and employees in meaningful service while strengthening our connection to the communities we serve. My advice to others is to find a cause that has personal meaning to them and start where they can. You don’t have to make a huge commitment to make a difference. Consistent acts of service, no matter how small, can have a significant impact over time.
If your philanthropic work had a theme song, what would it be and why?
It would be “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. The song is about hoping for good things in the lives of others and wanting them to have opportunities and find happiness. That’s what initiatives like our “Christmas in July” toy drive are all about—bringing a little comfort and encouragement to children and families who may be going through one of the most challenging times in their lives.
Outside of your work with the organization, what are three local spots that you especially love?
I enjoy spending time with my family and taking advantage of everything Arizona has to offer. One of my favorite places is Saguaro Lake. Whether it’s boating, fishing or simply being out on the water, it’s a place where our family has made a lot of great memories. I also enjoy visiting Usery Mountain Regional Park. The hiking trails and mountain views are a great reminder of how beautiful the East Valley can be. A local restaurant I especially love is Joe’s Farm Grill. I appreciate its local roots, relaxed atmosphere and the way it brings people together over a great meal.
