This Mission Monday column shines a light on those difference-makers. Each week, we spotlight a philanthropic leader or volunteer whose passion for service is creating real, lasting impact across the state. Through their stories, we explore the “why” behind their giving, the mission that fuels their commitment and the nonprofit organizations working tirelessly to serve Arizona’s most pressing needs.
Today, we welcome Chris Cuevas, an active community leader and board member of Chandler Compadres, a nonprofit organization that has spent 45 years supporting children and families throughout the East Valley.
What inspired you to get involved with Chandler Compadres?
I was inspired by Chandler Compadres’ commitment to improving the lives of children and families throughout the East Valley. Seeing local business and community leaders come together to raise money and support organizations that directly impact young people showed me how powerful it can be to give back close to home.
The opportunity to make a tangible difference in my own community was something I wanted to be part of, and the mission has only become more meaningful during my eight years as a Compadre.
For those unfamiliar, can you share the organization’s core mission?
Our mission is to improve the lives of children in the East Valley by raising funds for local youth-serving organizations. We support these organizations through philanthropy, volunteer service and community leadership. It is all about helping nonprofits build stronger programs and reach more children and families who need their support.
What is a moment that truly captures the organization’s impact?
For me, it is seeing the changes in the children we help support. Some may begin with poor grades, behavioral challenges, limited friendships or struggles with their mental health. Then, with the right programs, resources and people around them, you see them begin to thrive in school, develop a more positive outlook and build friendships they may not have had before. I have witnessed transformations like that throughout my eight years with Chandler Compadres. Those moments remind us that the money we raise is not just a number. It can change the direction of a child’s life.
Are there any upcoming events or initiatives you are especially excited about?
Every year, we host our largest fundraising event, Rock the Cause. Around 1,500 people come together for a great night while raising money for the charities we support. The event, which happens on Nov. 7 this year, features live bands, DJs, indoor and outdoor entertainment and an auction filled with incredible items. It is a fun night, but there is also a real sense of purpose behind it. Everyone is there to help us raise more money for East Valley children and families.
How do you balance your professional life with giving back?
I am fortunate to have a team at work that supports both my company and my involvement with Chandler Compadres. My wife is also a huge source of support and is always willing to help with whatever I may need.
I believe that when someone truly wants to give back, they will find a way to make the time. Seeing the children whose lives are affected by this work is what pushes many of us to keep going, work harder and raise even more money.
If your philanthropic work had a theme song, what would it be?
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey. There are so many songs that could relate to the work we do, but this one is all about persistence and refusing to give up. That message reflects how I approach this work, but it also speaks to the children we support. We want them to keep believing in themselves, their futures and everything they are capable of achieving.
Outside of Chandler Compadres, what are three things you especially enjoy?
I am always up for finding a great local sushi restaurant. I also enjoy taking a relaxing weekend vacation and, most importantly, spending time with my family.
