Hollywood favorite Ted McGinley is steering straight into nostalgia this December as he returns to his Newport Beach roots to serve as Grand Marshal of the 117th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade. The hometown hero — known for everything from “Happy Days” and “The Love Boat” to “Married…with Children” and the Emmy-nominated “Shrinking” — will launch the five-night tradition on December 17, setting the tone for this year’s “Magical Nights of Lights” celebration.

For one of the country’s most iconic waterfront spectacles, McGinley is an effortless fit — a Newport Harbor High alum and former lifeguard whose roots run as deep as the harbor itself. His return adds extra shine to a parade already known for its over-the-top boats, fireworks, and 14 miles of pure holiday glow.
And for Arizonans itching for a festive getaway, this is the one worth packing an overnight bag for. If any holiday tradition deserves a quick escape from the desert, it’s this coastal light show where more than 100 illuminated boats steal the spotlight.
Running December 17–21 at 6:30 p.m., the parade brings a nightly wave of glowing vessels, fresh activations, and high-energy entertainment across nearly 50 viewing spots. Opening night lands at Marina Park with a Holiday Market, food, live music, and fireworks at 6:15 p.m., right before McGinley sails in to kick things off.
A rotating cast of Grand Marshals — from nonprofits and first responders to the Rose Queen and OCSA’s standout performers — rounds out a week packed with pageantry, community pride, and plenty of coastal charm.
