Insider Info

Harkins is still family-run and happens to be the largest privately owned theater chain in the country, with a footprint that stretches far beyond Arizona.

Local movie nights are about to shift into something far more immersive. Harkins Theatres is introducing 4D moviegoing experiences this August, adding a full-sensory layer to the traditional trip to the theater.

The Arizona-based brand is partnering with Lumma 4D E-Motion to bring in-theater effects that go beyond the screen. Motion-synced seating, bursts of air, environmental cues, and even scent are designed to align with the action, pulling audiences deeper into the story.

“We are always looking for opportunities to enhance ‘Harkins Ultimate Moviegoing’ in a way that meets our moviegoers’ high expectations,” says Mike Bowers, CEO and President of Harkins Theatres. “This new movie experience is fully immersive and fun while staying true to our standards for comfort, quality presentation and storytelling.”

The first 4D auditorium is slated to open at Harkins Norterra in North Phoenix, becoming the first of its kind in Arizona. The rollout is part of a six-location agreement, with three Arizona theaters confirmed so far and three more expected to be announced shortly.

The format arrives alongside a lineup of major releases. Films like “Insidious 6,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “Resident Evil,” “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping,” “Jumanji 3,” and “Avengers: Doomsday” are expected to be part of the experience, giving audiences a more physical connection to familiar franchises.

For a company that has spent more than 90 years refining the theater experience, this move continues a pattern of incremental innovation. Harkins has introduced premium formats, upgraded seating, and enhanced concessions over the years. This latest addition leans into immersion, while still emphasizing comfort and presentation.
