In addition to the needed new vehicle, the sanctuary is also opening its gates again in October with the return of guided tours and volunteer orientations following its summer closure to the public. Tours give guests a closer look at sanctuary life, the pigs’ individual stories and the day-to-day work involved in caring for animals that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

For Better Piggies Rescue, a set of wheels can mean the difference between getting to an animal in crisis and having no safe way to bring it home. The North Valley sanctuary is asking the community for help after its rescue vehicle was totaled in an accident, leaving the nonprofit without the transportation it relies on when calls come in about abandoned, injured or loose pigs.

Those calls can come from the Arizona Humane Society, police departments or the Arizona Department of Agriculture. Responding means loading kennels, making room for animals of different sizes and, in Arizona, having reliable air conditioning for the ride.

“A rescue vehicle is not a convenience for us. It is how we get to pigs when they need help,” founder and director Danielle Betterman says. “Without it, there are moments when we know an animal needs us, and we simply cannot get there the way we need to.”

Founded in 2017, Better Piggies Rescue cares for more than 210 rescued pigs. The organization is seeking donations toward a dependable van or large SUV with working air conditioning and enough space to safely transport multiple large kennels.

In Arizona, that air conditioning is essential. Rescues can involve more than one pig, and secure, climate-controlled transportation matters even more during the Valley’s hottest months.

“Every rescue looks a little different,” Betterman says. “Sometimes it is one scared pig. Sometimes it is several. But every time, we need a safe way to bring them home.”

The rescue is also hoping to hear from dealerships, businesses, fleet programs or individuals who may be able to provide a suitable vehicle at a discounted nonprofit rate.

Donations toward the replacement vehicle are tax-deductible and can be made through PayPal or Venmo at @betterpiggiesrescue, or by texting PIG to 707070.
